OUR PHILOSOPHY & MISSION
/ CORE VALUES
01
Our core values are to help propel a student into a successful future career. We hope to see all of our students enrolling in higher education and pursuing their dream through education. We hope to help students find their dreams and passion and give them a pathway to pursue it.
/ OUR PROGRAM STRUCTURE
02
We believe it is very important to have our students active in our program. Astin (1993) said that if students are involved in programs they are more likely to be retained. Because of this we make sure that students are very active. We offer two components to our program, the after school program and the summer program.
The after school program meets four days a week from 2:00-3:30 in the yellow building at Brockton High School. On Mondays we have a tutoring session. This is mandatory to any student who falls below a 2.5 GPA and any student is welcome to attend. We also meet for senior advising and freshman mentoring on Mondays. Tuesdays and Wednesdays we meet with sophomore and juniors for MCAS and SAT preparation. Every other Thursday we meet for an Educational Workshop that will educate a student socially, culturally, or academically. For more details on the after school program please see the above tab.
The summer program is a six week residential program that is held at Bridgewater State University. In this time students are offered classes to prepare them for the future, field trips, community service, and activities. This program allows students to experience what living on campus would be like in the future. For more information on the summer program please see the above tab.
OUR NATIONAL & LOCAL HISTORY
01
/ NATIONAL HISTORY
Upward Bound was founded in 1964 when the Educational Opportunity Act was passed. The purpose was to help students from a low-income background or students who were first generation college bound pursue higher education. In 1965 Talent Search was founded with the Higher Education Act. TRIO Programs were put in place for the next forty years in order to better serve this population. There are now eight different types of federally funded TRIO programs including, Upward Bound, Veterans Upward Bound, Upward Bound Math/Science, Educational Talent Search, Educational Opportunity Centers, Student Support Services, TRIO Professional Services, and McNair. Upward Bound is unique as it works with high school students and gives them an opportunity to have a residential experience on a college campus. This year, 2014, is the 50th anniversary of Upward Bound!
/ PROGRAM HISTORY
02
Upward Bound came to Brockton, MA in 2003. Our program is funded to serve 50 students a year. We take students in every grade (Freshman-Senior) and once they have been accepted we follow them through their high school career and into college. Since the beginning we have seen many students attend higher education, and are excited with the paths that students are on. We look forward to continue to serve our students for many years to come. American Student Assistance began sponsoring us in 2012. There work is in supporting students financially through college and it has been an excellent pairing. Their core values match very well with that of TRIO programs and together we are working to make access to higher educaiton easier. In Brockton there are other American Student Assistance sponsored TRIO programs. Brockton offers a Talent Search Program and an Educational Opportunity Center.
